N Kilmartin, General Manager

An Interview with Nick Kilmartin

I met Nick Kilmartin, General Manager for Oakridge Hotels at the Brackenborough Hotel and Bistro, their boutique hotel in Louth, Lincolnshire. Having sourced the position for Nick almost a year ago, we were keen to catch up with him and see if his objectives had been achieved...

As I sit in the newly refurbished restaurant at the Brackenborough, I ask Nick what brought him into the Hospitality Industry. I sort of fell into the industry he tells me. I didn't know what I wanted to do when I left school to be honest. I started at the age of fifteen in a hotel in York and I got a bit of a bug for it.
Nick tells me about his early career working in most hotel departments and in a variety of locations. His goal initially though was to become an Operations Manager. This was my aim and so I had to undertake supervisory positions to obtain the relevant skills to get to that level.

Nick achieved his aim, and is now flourishing in his first General Managers appointment. Set in the beautiful Lincolnshire countryside it is a far cry from Nick's early career in the hustle and bustle of the city. It is completely different to where I have worked before - I found it a lot slower and it was difficult to adjust to at first. But now a year on, I'm really enjoying it. It is a totally different market and I had to adapt to it, which I believe I have done

The role of General Manager had just been created in the hotel, as it had been previously managed by the proprietor, so Nick was the first incumbent of the position. Like any good General Manager, Nick set targets for his first year at the hotel. When I arrived, room occupancy was my major focus. Through looking at sales and marketing, I have been able to implement some strategies that have improved this. For example, in January 2007 we had 53% occupancy, this year we are over 70%.

This is not the only area Nick is striving to improve upon. Weddings have doubled and events and conferences have also risen. This is due to an improvement in the product, our reputation and the people that work here. So it's been improvement all round.

In the past 18 months the Brackenborough Hotel has undergone a complete refurbishment which includes all bedrooms and public areas. The hotel now offers a boutique style to its guests, which has been well received by customers. The management aren't going to rest on their laurels though. We are looking to fill the brand new function room - the aim is to further improve the conference market during the week. As for weddings, 2009 will be our biggest year so far !

And personally?
My own aim is to make a success of this hotel, but to grow with the business and become General Manager of the next hotel purchased by the company.
